Englands’s Community Forests
The Power of Trees

BRIEF: Inspire people to care about the trees in their surrounding area

IDEA: Write about the incredible things trees do for us, but with a twist: it’s the tree speaking, the narrator gradually revealed as you listen.

SCRIPT:

I may sound young, but I’m older than you.

I know a few tricks - and you’re lucky I do.

If you’re willing to hear, I have secrets to share.

Not afraid to throw shade, I’m a breath of fresh air -

I’m a teacher. A cleaner. A healer. A home.

A parent. A child, with a mind of my own.

And over the decades I’ve weathered some storms.

Learned to face pressure in so many forms.

Learned how to live life in tune with the seasons.

Everything changes; the world has its reasons,

And these are the meanings, the lessons, the ways

To stand, strong and stoic, through difficult days.

I’m a silent observer - but do you know what?

Don’t mistake my silence for indifference: it’s not.

Don’t think for a minute my stillness is passive.

I’m patient by nature, but my impact is massive.

My message is simple - it’s: notice me, please.

This world can’t afford to lose sight of the trees.

The world wouldn’t work without us in the picture.

Money may not grow on me; what does is much richer.

So go on outside, look around and you’ll see:

There’s no better neighbour than little old me.
